Learn the art of sand casting in this fun and intensive 1 day course. Sand casting is a casting process you can do from home which involves making a piece, often in wax or using natural or found objects and impressing it into a bed of sand.
This creates a sand mould which you then pour molten silver or other metals into to create the cast piece which you can then clean up to create a finished solid silver, brass or gold piece.
It is a magical and addictive process.
In this sand casting course you will start the day with casting a natural piece such as a twig or found object to learn the casting process. Following this you will have the chance to carve a simple piece out of wax to then cast yourself.
This class runs from 10-5pm and is a fun and intensive day open to anyone and suitable for absolute beginners.
(It can help to take one of our wax carving courses beforehand but it is not essential)
Techniques covered in this class include:
- The sand casting process
- Using and heating the crucible
- Using flux in your casting
- Creating a completed sand cast piece (or two)
- Cleaning up your castings to create finished pieces
Classes are very small with a maximum of 8 students allowing close attention from the tutor. A great day, packed full of techniques and you will have the chance to make 1-2 lovely pieces of jewellery from silver to take home with you.
